How does one use this site to learn Korean?

Hi there, my name is Colin and I am trying to learn to speak Korean. I have been in Korea for 7 months now and have decided it’s time to buckle down and learn the language. I found your common vocabulary list and other files but have no idea what exactly they mean. How would I use your site to learn a little new Korean everyday?

Thanks, great site!

Colin

The answer to your question is: Do not use my site to learn a little new Korean every day. I do not even use my site to learn a little new Korean every day. The high-minded part of me hopes that my site will be useful to my readers; the middle-minded parts likes that I have some record of my language-learning journey; the low-minded part knows that a lot of blogging is narcissism for introverts, and thus appreciates “great site!”.

You mentioned that you’ve been in Korea for seven months already and are just now going to learn the language. Kudos to you (and all the rest of you out there like Colin). I like Seth Godin’s recent take on the best time to get started. You’re doing great.

You didn’t mention if you already know how to read hangul. If you don’t, you can find several good resources in the Resources section. Pick one, and have a good weekend.

I’ve already given you more than you’ve asked for, and I’ll stop there. But I’ve recently changed my own focus, and I plan to post more about it in the near future.

"blogging is narcissism for introverts"

Heh. Never thought of it before, but you're so right! (goes offline to ponder sudden existential crisis...)

Well, I for one am still wondering how to use the vocab lists. I've always wondered, just never asked.

Question: Are you able to successfully download and open any of the vocab files?

The Basic Vocab List for Studying Korean opens as file 5965.

The columns are
순위 단어 품사 풀이 등급

The first row reads (nothing in column D)
1195 가게 명 A

I have absolutely no idea what I'm supposed to do with it?

21st-Century Seonbi has done some work breaking down the vocab list, but not as much as I know he wants to.

Other than that, I'd say it's up to you to decide how you want to use it. I don't use the list myself, but I've spent some time looking over it, and I always find something interesting in it.
