Hello! 안녕하세요 Reincarnated
Last week, Hello! 안녕하세요 changed both its format as well as its hosts. I wish I could say the changes were for the better.
First, the upside. This version is the first since the first version of Arirang TV’s Let’s Speak Korean that is designed for a true beginner of the Korean language. Thus far, each episode has focused on teaching 한글. You don’t need a television program to teach you how to read and write 한글, but it does fill a perceived void by some students of Korean.
All previous episodes of Hello! 안녕하세요 are still available in VOD. There is a wealth of useful information there if you’re still as much of a beginner as I am. I haven’t seen them all yet, but now seems like an excellent time to work through them.
And now, the downside. The format has returned to the two hosts-two students model. The addition of the students doesn’t add anything to the program (ditto for Let’s Speak Korean) and takes up teaching time in an already short nine minutes.
And the hosts? Beau Jackson has replaced Richard Harris and 최현정 has replaced 장은아. I can only surmise that the producers want both hosts and students to dial up the energy level (how exciting can you make learning 한글, anyway?). If that’s the case, they’re reaching their goal.
Maybe I’m just missing the calm presence of Richard and 장은아. My Korean isn’t good enough to understand all of 장은아’s Korean, but I liked making the effort.
Or maybe it’s just that I’m not their target audience.
You decide.
