Language study update

On Friday, I started studying the Novice II level of the Sogang University course. I don’t know yet how far it extends, but the first lesson examines only two grammar points. I wouldn’t mind if they were all like that.

I’ve always wanted to be able to loop the audio on Sogang, and this past week I finally discovered a solution. I’m using Freecorder to create audio files, which I can then repeat ad infinitum.

I’m currently behind in my goal of learning one new 한자 per day, and I’m taking my time in catching up.

Update

Although the last few weeks have been slow blogging weeks, they have not been without actual Korean study. 인선 and I continue to meet. Last night we completed the Novice I level of the Sogang University course. We’ll spend the rest of this month in weekly conversation (and answering my endless questions) before moving on to the next level. 인선 suggested at the beginning of Novice I that by the end of it we should be able to converse totally in Korean. We’re not yet, but it’s getting easier to talk about everyday things in Korean.

Next month will bring a new challenge, as 인선 will be traveling for a few weeks starting in mid-May. I’ve asked her to find a tutor for me during that time. My wide-ranging pessimistic self imagines that whatever comfort level I’ve achieved with 인선 will be smashed to pieces before it achieves a new, stronger state.

Breaking It Down: The Kangmi Method of Language Study

I’ve written before about the level of detail involved in my Korean language study routine. That routine has been influenced by my last year and a half of study, my on-and-off attempts since I returned to the States, and my four and a half years living in Korea.

Even the last year had periods where I was more off than on. Periods of intense study were followed by periods of sporadic study which were followed by periods of no study which were followed by periods of intense study trying to make up for the lack of study.

Language study update

I mentioned yesterday that I have been able to implement parts of my language study program, but not others. Here’s what’s working so far:

- I’ve been able to complete my daily Supermemo repetitions.
- I’m keeping up with the 서강대학교 course, but not as well as I would like. However, the near future looks good for more intense study.
- I’m meeting my goal of learning one new 한자 a day.

Using the hiatus

My hiatus was useful in several ways.

- I was able to make a few planned changes to the site. There are always more changes in the offing, but most of the major ones are now behind me. I’m not much of a multitasker, so keeping up with my studies and trying to solve site problems was beginning to wear me down. My New Year’s resolution is to not make a single change to the site for one week. Blogging only.

- The hiatus gave me space to review my Korean studies. There are several specific things that I plan to do in the near future:
