Earlier this year, I decided to learn one new 한자 every day, Sunday-Thursday (up from last year’s late resolution). So far, I’ve managed to keep to that schedule. “Studying” each character involves several elements:
- I created a grid containing 192 small squares. I always have extra blank copies of this grid in the three-ring binder that serves as my organizer. I write each 한자 192 times.
- At the top of this grid, I include blanks for the 한자 pronunciation (음), the corresponding Korean and English words, and the date on which I will study this 한자. These are filed in my binder in chronological order.
- Because I post each 한자 to kangmi, there are elements of advance planning unique to my situation. I currently have several future weeks of 한자 in my binder. In the meantime, I create and upload each image, write the Repertoire and Supermemo posts, and add each character to my online Supermemo collection. I try to do a couple every day so that I’ll have a cushion for life events that preclude study (resulting in less guilt when I’m able to pick it up again).
- Because I always have my organizer with me, I can pull it out whenever I have a slow moment and write a few rows of 한자.
- I don’t use 한자 regularly, so my Supermemo repetitions are particularly important. Every single character I learn is regularly reviewed.
- 인선 reviews my 한자 every week and makes suggestions on how to improve my 한자 handwriting.
