One year later

It was a year ago today that I first posted about my Korean language study journey. In some ways it’s been a long year; in others it is as if it were yesterday.

I started out at http://www.koreanlanguage.blogspot.com (now defunct). After quickly outgrowing Blogger, I moved to TypePad, setting up shop at http://www.kangmi.blogs.com (also defunct). The long-running blog blockage finally led me to consider moving to another platform, and it wasn’t until I moved to Expression Engine that I found a place online to call home. I plan to stay here for a while.

Seoul Unveils New Chinese Name

The Korea Times reports today that Seoul has chosen a new Chinese name, 首爾 ("leading city"), to replace 漢城.

The new name is expected to solve confusions caused by the differences between Chinese characters, “漢城 (hancheng),” used by China and the original pronunciation of the name of the city, Seoul Mayor Lee Myung-bak said in a news conference.

“Many problems have been caused due to the differences,’” said Professor Jun In-cho of Yonsei University in Seoul, who had participated in the committee.

As one of such examples, Jun said Seoul National University has been confused with Hansung University in Seoul as China uses the characters with a different pronunciation from Seoul.

“We hope this new name is not considered as a controversial diplomatic issue,’’ a city official said. “It is our request for China to accept and use our proper name, not force them to use this new name.’”

The official said the city has received “very passive” responses from the Chinese Embassy in Seoul regarding the name change.

Korean Language Notes

Gerry Bevers has added another Korean language study blog to the blogosphere called Korean Language Notes. At the moment, it looks as if he’s replicating material from his MSN group Korean as a Second Language.

If you’ve got the time, Gerry’s got some interesting things at his MSN group site, but I know that I’m going to prefer the blog format. I like small doses of new things that may later be useful.

Hat tip to Oranckay for giving us the news.

I got a new handheld

New to me, that is. Someone close to me upgraded to a Blackberry and offered me their Tungsten E, which I gladly accepted (valuable not only for itself, but for helping me to avoid the long decision-making process).

I installed CJK OS in order to read 한글. I installed a trial version of e4u Dic 1.0. Not sure if this is the product I will purchase, but I haven’t been able to find anything else I want to buy.

Installing DioPen transformed most of my Palm into a 한글 environment. Break out the 사전!

Thanks to all who offered their advice, both publicly and privately.
